In Uluru National Park of the Northern Territory, you can find the magnificent Olgas. The Olgas are made up of 36 massive rock domes, also known as bornhardts, covering an area of thirteen and a half square miles. The Olgas are located in central Australia in the southern part of the Northern Territory, about 265 kilometers away from Alice Springs and around 30 kilometers from Uluru. The tallest of the domes, Mount Olga, stands 546 meters taller than the surrounding area, or about 1066 meters above sea level. The domes are constructed of sedimentary rock, containing many different types of stones. Some of these compacted ingredients are sandstone, granite, and basalt.
The Olgas are called Kata Tjuta (pronounced ka-ta-joo-ta) by the Aboriginal people. This name means "many heads" in their language and is a fitting name for the 36 domed rocks. The English name, Olga, came from Queen Olga of Württemberg. This name was designated as a gift of appreciation from Baron Ferdinand von Mueller.
There are three trails that wind through the beautifully quiet Olgas. They will bring you to the Mount Olga Gorge, the Kata Tjuta Lookout, and the Valley of the Winds. As you walk these peaceful trails, you may hear the sounds of birds such as Port Lincoln parrots and grey-headed honey-eaters piercing the silence.
Tourists may want to take note that the Uluru National Park does charge an entrance fee. They will charge $25.00 for every adult over 16 years old, and the pass is good for three days. Children under 16 are admitted for free.
